Between the musket and the gavel

The Māori Wars and the colonial courts stand at the intersection of law, conflict, and sovereignty in Aotearoa’s history. The heart of my research begins with one simple question: What happens when a legal system dominates a way of life?. Join me in my research into the New Zealand wars and the Colonial Courts, with a focus on Māori affairs.

About me

Kia ora! my name is Awanui and I am a law student at the university of Auckland majoring in politics & international relations. My time at university has brought to light the historical amnesia faced in many classrooms when it comes to Aotearoa's colonial history, especially concerning the New Zealand wars, and the legal proceedings that largely targeted and discriminated against Māori. As this is a new beginning for me as well, I hope to open up my learning journey to others. Overall, this is a personal research project, I don't expect to rival the New York Times, but I hope you enjoy the taonga that is our history.
