The North Island - Te ika-a-Maui

The North Island was the heart of early cooperation & resulting early conflicts between Māori and the Crown. It was here that Te Tiriti o Waitangi was first signed, and soon after where the promises of partnership began to unwind. The Northern Wars of 1845-1872 led by figures like Hone Heke and Kawiti, revealed deep tensions in sovereignty, mana, and colonial authority.
